The Nigerian League of Democratic Professionals (NLDP) has hailed the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the peaceful and successful conduct of the Anambra governorship primary election.
A statement signed by its National Coordinator, Hon. Chibuike Jonas at the end of the monitoring of the APC primary in Awka, the non-partisan group applauded the Governor Kashim Shettima led APC primary committee for Anambra governorship election for upholding the tenets of democracy in its activities and ultimately for strengthening Nigeria’s growing democracy.

Dismissing insinuations that the party’s flagbearer was sponsored by the presidency, Jonas emphasized that the pedigree of Hon. Tony Nwoye earned him victory in the primary election.

Jonas, who is also a former Chairman of Arochukwu LGA of Abia State, said the electoral processes of the APC, starting from the accreditation of delegates to the final announcement of Nwoye as the winner of the contest was open, fair and credible.

“It based on the transparency of the primary election that the contenders embraced themselves after the exercise without grievances.

“There was level playing ground and as such all the contenders accepted the result in good faith.

“We commend the decorum, maturity and discipline demonstrated by all stakeholders especially the candidates. With the outcome of the primary, we have no doubt in the capacity of the APC to sustain its internal democracy at all levels.”

Jonas also described as unfortunate and undemocratic the inability of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to conduct hitch-free primary election for the Anambra gubernatorial election.

According to him, the protests by most of the contenders including Chief Ifeanyi Uba, Senator Stella Oduah, Prince John Emeka and Hon. Lynda Ikpeazu is a clear indication that the PDP did not provide level playing ground for the primary election.

He noted that for the country to make progress, political parties and politicians must strictly adhere to the doctrine of democratic governance, adding that politics should be played by rules and as such elections should not be seen as a do or die affair.

Jonas stressed that the rejection of the results of the PDP primary in Anambra State by most of the contestants is a testament to the irregularities that characterized the election.

While pleading with the PDP to learn from its past mistakes of election malpractices, the National Coordinator used the opportunity to admonish other political parties to emulate the democratic virtues of the APC, reminding them that of paramount importance to Ndi-Anambra citizens is the sustenance of peace and stability in the State as well as provision of dividends of democracy.
