According to reports from Lagos, as yet unconfirmed by the Blues, City have swooped on the 24-year-old Austria Vienna front man, ahead of Newcastle, who were also in the hunt.
The player's wife also posted a picture of her husband at the City Football Academy at the weekend, before taking it down again.
Kayode, whose first name is usually shortened to 'Larry', was top scorer in the Austrian Bundesliga last season as Vienna finished second, and has netted 30 goals in 67 games for the Violets.
Kayode began his career at Red Bull Ghana but moved to Ivory Coast club ASEC Mimosas – who produced Yaya and Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Eboue and Salomon Kalou – as a teenager.
Since then he has meandered around several backwaters in Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Israel, where he score 13 goals in 31 games for Maccabi Netanya, before signing for Vienna two summers ago.
His career has taken off in the Austrian capital, his goal exploits earning him a call-up to the senior Nigeria team in March.
